Museo GAM
The GAM Center is a meeting place between audience and culture, specializing in arts and music. Its aim is to coordinate content creation, cities and experience from its headquarters in the heart of Santiago, facilitating access to culture and training of audiences.
In its 22 thousand square meters, formerly occupied by the Diego Portales Building, the Center houses ten rooms for theater, dance, music, visual arts and testing, plus two seminar rooms and a recording studio. Your library has a multimedia collection and study rooms.
The center relies on a new dynamic for cultural management, prepared as a network of exchanges and mixture of artistic languages.
El Centro GAM es un lugar de encuentro entre audiencias y cultura, especializado en artes escénicas y musicales. Su objetivo es articular contenidos, creación, ciudades y experiencias desde su sede, en el corazón de Santiago, facilitando el acceso a la cultura y la formación de audiencias.
En sus 22 mil metros cuadrados de superficie, antiguamente ocupados por el edificio Diego Portales, el Centro alberga diez salas para teatro, danza, música, artes visuales y ensayo, además de dos salones de seminario y un estudio de grabación. Su biblioteca cuenta con una colección multimedia y salas de estudio.
El Centro confía en una nueva dinámica para la gestión cultural, dispuesta como una red de intercambios y mixtura de lenguajes artísticos.
History
After the conference, the building was renamed the Metropolitan Cultural Center Gabriela Mistral, but his days as an artistic core were brief, since the military coup of 1973 led him to be renowned as Diego Portales and to be used for operational purposes of the military junta.
Finally, the incident that triggered the building is as we know it happened in 2006, when a huge fire caused severe structural damage. This led the government functions of the then Ministry of Defense decided to rethink and make it the Gabriela Mistral Center. Today the GAM is a meeting point in the center of the neighborhoods Lastarria and Bellas Artes, where an important part of the cultural life of the capital is concentrated.
Historia
Cuando Salvador Allende llegó al gobierno, las miradas internacionales se dirigieron a Chile y el país fue invitado a albergar la Tercera Conferencia Mundial de Comercio y Desarrollo de las Naciones Unidas. Como no se contaba con la arquitectura adecuada, el edificio UNCTAD III – inaugurado el 3 de abril de 1972- se erigió especialmente para la ocasión en un plazo récord de 275 días, siendo que en esos tiempos una construcción de similares características habría durado tres años.
Después de la Conferencia, el edificio pasó a llamarse Centro Cultural Metropolitano Gabriela Mistral, pero sus días como núcleo artístico fueron breves, pues el golpe militar de 1973 lo llevó a ser renombrado como Diego Portales y a ser utilizado con fines operativos de la Junta Militar.
Finalmente, el incidente que gatilló que el edificio sea como lo conocemos actualmente ocurrió en 2006, cuando un gigantesco incendio causó graves daños en su estructura. Este hecho llevó a que el gobierno se replanteara las funciones del entonces Ministerio de Defensa y decidiera convertirlo en el Centro Gabriela Mistral. Hoy el GAM es en un punto de encuentro en el centro de los Barrios Lastarria y Bellas Artes, donde se concentra una parte importante de la vida cultural de la capital.
Spaces to see, listen and do
In any of the four seats designed to accommodate a large audience, in auditoriums or sometimes even in the library, you can find concerts, plays, art exhibitions and shows of dance, ranging from ballet to hip- hop (See calendar). Some of the most important events that have taken place in different spaces and rooms of the building are the "Festival of Hip-Hop: GAM Street" or the recently passed "Chilemonos: First International Animation Festival" among many others. One of the most acclaimed features of the GAM is that its various activities are focused on a diverse audience: children, youth, adults and seniors. In addition, the west side of the building you can find a small handicrafts and antiques fair, from Wednesday to Saturday from 09:00 to 19:00 hrs.
But besides being a center for people looking for culture and entertainment, GAM offers first class spaces for the creation and development of those involved professionally. Between these two rooms for Representation, four Chambers Test Preparation and installation art shows and dance (reserved for artistic companies use), Banquet visual arts and Folk Art two seminar rooms including systems for translation have , curtain and projections, and a recording studio for music companies. Some are paid or restricted use.
Espacios para ver, escuchar y hacer
En cualquiera de las cuatro Plazas diseñadas para acoger a una gran cantidad de público, en auditorios o a veces incluso en la Biblioteca, se pueden encontrar conciertos, obras de teatro, exposiciones artísticas y espectáculos de danza, los que van desde el ballet al hip-hop (Ver calendario). Algunos de los eventos más importantes que han tenido lugar en distintos espacios y salones del edificio son el“Festival de Hip-Hop: de la calle al GAM” o el recién pasado “Chilemonos: Primer Festival Internacional Animación”, entre muchos otros. Una de las características más aplaudidas del GAM es que sus diversas actividades están enfocadas en un público diverso: niños, jóvenes, adultos y adultos mayores. Además, al lado poniente del edificio se puede encontrar una pequeña feria de artesanías y antigüedades, de miércoles a sábado, entre 09:00 y 19:00 hrs.
Pero además de ser un Centro para la gente que busca cultura y entretención, el GAM ofrece espacios de primer nivel para la creación y el desarrollo de quienes se dedican profesionalmente. Entre éstos se cuentan dos Salas para Representación, cuatro Salas de Ensayo para preparación y montaje de espectáculos de arte y danza (uso reservado para compañías artísticas), Salas de artes visuales y de Arte Popular, dos Salones para Seminarios que incluye sistemas para la traducción, telón y proyecciones, y un Estudio de Grabación para compañías de música. Algunos son pagados o de uso restringido.
The building as a museum
Beyond the activities that fill the senses, perhaps the most significant value that the building project was conceived from the beginning, it is that allowed numerous works by artists and Chilean artisans were structurally integrated into the architectural project (See guided visits Patrimonial) collection. El edificio como museo
Más allá de las actividades que colman los sentidos, quizás el valor más significativo con que se gestó desde un inicio el proyecto del edificio, es que permitió que numerosas obras de artistas y artesanos chilenos fueran integradas estructuralmente al proyecto arquitectónico (Ver visitas guiadas de la Colección Patrimonial). Por este motivo, hoy es posible encontrarse con objetos artísticos-históricos que no están expuestos en vitrina, sino en los muros, puertas, techos y pasillos.
El edificio como lo conocemos hoy fue diseñado por Cristián Fernández Arquitectos, Lateral arquitectura & diseño.
BiblioGAM
One of the busiest places in the center (average 190 visits a day) is the "BiblioGAM". Located on the third floor of Building "A", it has open shelves for a collection of 2,900 titles and 4,500 volumes, which can be accessed freely within the library or becoming a member at an annual cost of $ 20,000 general public, or $ 10,000 weights according to different types of benefits and agreements. Inside the Library you can also access free of charge to the meeting rooms (reservations biblioteca@gam.cl or inn), the Board GAM Teaching Scotiabanck, Video Library, Biblioniños and four study rooms
